Green and gold wrapping paper (and microbeads)

Hi all.

Just got back from my last run of the week, and did 6.4. I had been aiming for around 7, but basically got lazy and cut my run short very close to my usual turn around. I’ve been feeling exhausted all week, and I think it just caught up to me. On the plus side, yesterday was my last day of work before the holidays, so now I have 2 weeks to recharge. Another plus is that I still managed to get in 59.4 miles this week (I really should have done that extra 0.6 to make it an even 60, but oh well), and I’m at 2510.8 for the year. I had an original goal of about 2000, so that’s pretty excellent.

In nails, I tested out a “caviar” set I bought in England over the summer. I found myself in Primark looking for a cheap t-shirt (I had spilled on the one I was wearing), and saw a 3D mani set at the cash for £1, so I bought it. Hadn’t opened it until the other day, because caviar nails actually freak me out a little. But I figured I should give it a try for a 1 day look, and if it drove me nuts, I could just pick off the beads at work the next day (which I did). So I did a mani using this set randomly on Wednesday night. I actually strangely liked it, so I might hit up Michaels and buy some more microbeads! Downside is that the super cheap polish was indeed super cheap, and actually peeled right off the next day in the shower. So this was actually a one day look. The other nails have sponged on glitter on the tips (OPI Carried Away) applied in a way inspired by Simply Nailogical’s tutorial (see the video tutorial at the end of the post here). What that technique does is it maximized the amount of glitter, since the jelly base of the polish gets absorbed by the sponge. Then I topcoated it all with NYC Grand Central.

My other mani this week is a dark green and gold wrapping paper inspired look. I did this on Thursday afternoon, and then looked at The Nailasaurus’s blog the next morning, and realized I had basically done the same thing (except hers is better, see it here). I did a base of Maybelline Color Show Walk in the Park, which is a super deep green that looks basically black after 2 coats. The plus side to the deep green vs black is that it doesn’t make my skin look quite so pale, and is a little softer than black. I really like it as an alternative. I took a pic (I was tired, so sketchy quality) attempting to show how green it is after one coat:

I did my ring finger in Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Celeb City, which is basically all superfine silver glitter. I also stamped with Moyou’s Kaleidoscope 10 (I really like these abstract kaleidoscope images, I need to get some more of these plates) in the same silver and topped it all off with NYC Grand Central. I also used Maybelline Color Show in Platinum Adorn on my pinkies, because my right pinkie nail is still all deformed from being in a splint, and it needs to be camouflaged. I applied the glitter with the same sponge method used above to make it extra glittery.

I love it. Its subtle, but sparkly, and using the glittery Celeb City to stamp makes my nails look almost vintagey and distressed. I do wish it was more green (vs looking black), but as I said, it is quite flattering on my yellowish skin tone.

I’ve also now had this look on for a full day of chem labs and it’s showing very little wear. And since there’s not a lot of glitter, it will hopefully be easier to remove than some looks I’ve done lately. And as an extra added fun bonus, it’s kind of Christmassy (as I said last post, I’ve been struggling with making my nails Christmassy!). I now wish I had actual wrapping paper like this. Instead, I have red plaid paper (I should probably try to do a plaid mani to match that as well…)

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for a Frozen inspired mani coming soon!

Moyou haul and Houndstooth nails

November’s running total: 219 miles

This year’s miles so far: 2,362.5

Nails bitten in the past 3 weeks: one! And it’s my deformed pinky nail which I think I’m going to lose, so whatever!

So I ordered a who bunch of Moyou plates the other day. And yes, I bought all of the ones shown below. Whats terrifying is that there’s another 26 or so plates in my cart that I want still. I’m waiting and hoping for a sale, or maybe just free shipping again. I also ordered a few more which are destined to be Christmas gifts (so not posted on here!), but the rest are all for me! So I’ve been having a great time stamping with my new Julep polishes as well!

I find actual photos of stamping plates to be somewhat difficult, but one thing I’ve noticed with MoYou is that their plates are always excellent quality and look exactly like the images online. So I’m posting pics from their website. If anyone wants actual pics, let me know.

Basically I’m super pumped to play with them and I’ve been doing my nails more frequently than usual as an excuse to try them out. Somehow, with all these crazy options, I ended up doing a simple houndstooth pattern in Sinful Colors Snow me White stamped with Rich in Heart (the deep purpley red that I love) using Fashionista 10. I did my pinkies with All About You. I loved this mani and found it incredibly striking. The purpley red was much less harsh than a pure black, and much more flattering. I wish I didn’t have to glitter my pinkies, but the right nail is really messed up due to being in a splint for 6 weeks. It’s got a huge horizontal crack through, and it’s all weird and bubbly. Honestly, it looks like it might fall off. So glitter camouflages that!

In the snowy sunshine

I’ve finally found a cheap topcoat that I like, which is Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Invisible. I think it might actually be a clear polish rather than a topcoat, and it dries rather slowly, but when it dries, it’s rock hard and super shiny. And it doesn’t smudge my stamping when I put it on. Good stuff. I need to try some more topcoats, but I am liking this stuff quite a bit, considering it was $1.99. It also doesn’t chip. At all. I had it on for 6 days with no chips, just some tip wear. Pretty awesome.

This month, I should be getting into the holiday nails. Lots of golds, reds and glitters. Yay!

Goals for running: 55 miles a week, even the week of Christmas! We’ll see if this is possible.

I love winter running so far. I mean, I loved it last year until about February as well, so I’m sure I’ll change my mind. So far it’s wonderful though. Nice fluffy snow, quiet streets and now I get to pull out all my winter gear.

I walked down to the river the other day, and noticed how fast it can freeze when we have a few weeks below 0. Check out the pictures below from the summer (end of August or beginning of Sept, I can’t remember) and last week.

Late summer on the river

Late summer on the river

Last week...Its already much more frozen

Last week…It’s even more frozen today

I am getting very excited for the river to freeze solid so I can go skating on it and do my long runs on it. Usually a few times each way on the river trails can add up to a good 18-20 miles. The ice is a little hard on my shins when I run, but it’s just so much fun! Last year I ran a race on it in January, so it should definitely be solid enough to run on in a few more weeks. Something to look forward to!

So far this month, I’ve run 27 runs and done 165 miles. This year I’m at 2296 miles. My original goal was 1900, so it’s going well. Last week, I managed 52.2 with parent teacher interviews int here and a class all day Saturday, so…success! This week should be similar.

For my nails, I decided I needed something bright and summery to get me through a long Thursday night and Friday morning full of interviews. So I went bright, glittery and somewhat crazy.

I used 2 coats each of Sinful Colors Endless Blue (bright blue) and Let’s Meet (a slightly glittery, fairly sheer yellow).  I then stamped from Moyou London’s Fashionista plate 7 in Sinful Colors Let’s Meet (a pinkish cream). I topped my pinkie with Sinful’s Hottie (blue glitter) and my middle and ring finger with Maybelline’s Color Show Jewels in Platinum Adorn. As I said, a little crazy, but nice and bright and cheerful. My nails are slowly growing longer, and I’ve been doing much better with not biting them. I currently hate all the topcoats that I have, so I won’t even mention what I used because it sucks.

All photos this week taken in the staff room at work…it’s too cloudy and cold outside to get nice pics!

On the plus side, I’m waiting on a huge order of more Moyou plates, so hopefully I’ll have something cool soon! On the down side, wearing a splint on my pinkie for 6 weeks caused the nail to crack horizontally down the middle (not all the way through, but about halfway), so that nail is super ugly. Oh well.

Running in a Winter Wonderland

Winter is here. Friday morning was -21C with the windchill. Today, it’s -16 with the wind, and there’s lots of wind and snow. Actually, it hasn’t seemed like it’s been snowing that much, but from whats on the ground, its obvious that continuous flurries for several days can add up.

I didn’t quite make my goal for last week, I made it to 46.3 miles. That’s OK though, because it was a weird week. My birthday week is always weird, due to Remembrance Day and general insanity at work due to it being report card season. This week will be better, although this week is also crazy due to Parent Teacher Conferences at work. The plus side to teaching higher grades is that I usually don’t have that many parents in to see me. The down side is that more parents probably should come in to see me, so I end up making loads of phone calls. Oh well. I guess I’ll need to do something awesome with my nails to get me through the week.

I ran 9.33 miles today. I always run into the wind on the way out, but of course, on the way back, the wind shifted directions, so I essentially ran 8 miles into the wind. I had forgotten how hard and different running in snow can be, and I can definitely feel all kinds of weird muscles and tendons that were worked in different ways now that I’ve warmed up and had my shower.

Heading out for my run this morning: balaclava-ed up!

The snow today!

In nails, I did my thumbs and indexes in Sinful Colors Rich in Heart. I’m really loving this colour lately. It’s beautiful, deep and sparkly and fairly subtle. My middle and rings are done in Sinful Colors Easy Going (a cream colour) which I don’t love, as its kind of boring, and then my pinkies are in Rich in Heart topped with All About You (a gold glitter). I then stamped on top of them with the Moyou London Bridal Plate 7 and the Sci Fi Plate 6.

Honestly, it’s not my favourite mani, but its kind of different from my usual love of hot pinks and blues. Much more subtle. And I definitely like the flower on my thumb. I’m wanting to order more Moyou plates, but feeling frustrated at the lack of free shipping right now. I will have to think about it.

My broken finger is FINALLY out of the splint during the day. After 5 weeks. It’s weird, doesn’t bend well, and is sore by the end of the day,  but I’m so glad to not have to wear it all the time!

Have a great week!

Nails for the week!

So I took Monday off for my birthday (YAY!) and today was Remembrance Day! So it was a 4 day weekend, which is wonderful. I’ve been feeling exhausted lately, so the extra sleep and rest time was much appreciated.

I actually slept in until 11 today, so I skipped my run. I will likely run to/from work the next 3 days, so I should still be able to keep this weeks mileage above 50. The goal until December is to get my mileage more consistently in the 60s. I hope to try to get some faster running in as well, but being as there is already snow on the ground, I think a lot of those miles are going to be slow and easy.

So far this week I did:

Sunday: 7.26 miles, 10:23 pace

Monday: 8.06 miles, 10:22 pace

Tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday should each be 11 miles. We will see what happens Saturday. 8ish probably.

I also went and bought some new polish for my birthday. I hit up Target and got some more Sinful Colors (my favourite brand, it just lasts so long, and is so cheap!). I picked up Rich in Heart, a deep reddish/purplish/blackish shimmery polish, the weird glow in the dark polish (haven’t tried it yet) and All about You, a gold glitter. I wish we got all the holiday colours here in Canada, but I’ll take what I can get. I also grabbed NYC Matte me Crazy topcoat, which has been awesome so far. I love matte polish, and it’s been hard to find. My last polish is Maybelline’s Color Show Jewels in Platinum Adorn, a silver bar glitter with some random dots. Cool stuff.  Be aware, I’m taking these photos at night. I will try to redo some tomorrow in daylight.

Platinum Adorn

Rich in Heart and Black on Black

So I took off the red/cream pattern and did some shiny/matte black nails. I started with 2 coats of Sinful Colors Black on Black, then a coat of Matte about you on all fingers but my ring fingers. Then I stamped on a pattern from Moyou London’s Bridal plate 7 in the Black on Black.

Lacquer Lockdown - MoYou London Bridal Collection, say I do, wedding nail art, bridal shower nail art, rehersal dinner nail art, marriage nails, wedding nails, honeymoon nails, love birds, wedding rings, tuxedos, new stamping plates 2014, new image plates 2014, new nail art plates 2014, nail art, stamping, MoYou London, bridesmaids nail art, lace nail art, lace nails

So what I ended up with is a shiny pattern on a matte nail. Subtle but pretty and hard to photograph. On my ring fingers, I did Rich in Heart topped with Platinum Adorn. It brightens up an otherwise dull mani. However, I forgot how much cleaning up black stamping sucks. Its so hard to get perfect! So ignore the bits I missed, I’ll deal with them tomorrow in daylight.

Bright light=weird looking skin, but you can see the shiny/matte better!

I have only photographed my left hand, because my right pinkie is in a splint right now. I broke it at rugby in the summer and am very much looking forward to it getting removed. One more week! So my right hand looks kind of silly, as there’s a giant white plastic splint on one finger…oh well!

Question for the runners: Should I be running my easy runs faster? Usually I am actually closer to a 9:50 mile, but I don’t stop my watch for traffic lights or anything like that. Again, I run a 1:38 half marathon. Thanks for the input!
